Fieldstone LEED's the Way!

Written by Brita Brookes Marketing Coordinator

Fieldstone Architecture and Engineering is pleased to have hosted an Open House on March 20, 2015 with contractor of record J. Bolt Construction in order to show the Temple Terrace community it’s FIRST LEED certified home.

About the FARR HOUSE Project:

The FARR HOUSE is a custom home designed by Fieldstone Architecture and Engineering and is now a LEED For Homes Registered Project and also a LEED For Homes official Project Under Construction. The 3,975 square foot home sits on a double lot in the historic Riverhills neighborhood adjacent to the Hillsborough River in Temple Terrace, Florida.

With a clean contemporary design, the home has an upper level containing 2 guest bedrooms with their own baths and a loft space. The primary living space is located on the ground floor and includes an art studio, a master bedroom and his and her bathrooms that literally hug two 100 year old oak trees. The outdoor living space includes a linear covered pool and Ipe wood decking throughout. The client required a design that had a low impact on the site, a high amount of building function, a high performance building envelope, be environmentally sensitive and achieve an official LEED certification level.

The home has a geothermal heating and cooling system, the ground floor is stained concrete, the building envelope is constructed using ICF (insulated concrete form) walls with an R-value over 40, the grounds are a ‘‘xeriscape” (no maintenance needed), the driveway is a permeable surface (rain water passes through the surface), and the outdoor decking and interior floor is done in Ipe wood.

The Farr House will be hosting a USGBC (United States Green Building Council) tour open to students and community in the near future. The City of Temple Terrace will present the design team with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Temple Terrace’s City Councilman,Vice Mayor, Grant Rimbey has a LEED sustainability vision for the city and is elated to be able to tour and highlight the home as a model for the future. Homeowner Kathleen Farr, who is an advocate for sustainable community development, is honored to have her home as Temple Terrace’s first LEED certified project.

The 100+ Year Old Oak Trees:

In addition to the design’s programmatic demands, the building site contained it’s own set of challenges. The building sits on a site with existing 100+ year old oak trees. In order to save the trees, the new structure works it’s way around the existing historical trees both above the tree roots and below the tree canopy. Fieldstone worked closely with the City’s arborist and a local arborist to ensure preservation of the trees. The trees now remains a landscape landmark and is literally ‘‘hugged’’ by the homes configuration.

About LEED Certification:

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. LEED for Homes applies to single family homes, low-rise multi-family (one to three stories), or mid-rise multi-family (four to six stories).
